Linux Projects Course – Build a Real Ubuntu Server
Build a real Ubuntu server in 5 weeks. Host a website, create storage and media services, set up WireGuard and complete a final Linux project live online.
10 sessions · 5 Weeks · Starts 10 October 2026
Description
The Linux Projects Course is a five-week, five-project programme for learners who want to move beyond beginner commands and start building real Linux infrastructure.
Across the five projects, you will naturally become more confident with Linux syntax, understand what the commands actually do, and learn how to use them in real-world situations. Instead of learning Linux by memorising long lists of commands, you will learn by building.
GitHub Portfolio
In the first week, you will create your own GitHub profile. Each time you complete a project, you will document it and upload it to GitHub. By the end of the five weeks, you will have a GitHub portfolio containing practical Linux projects that demonstrate what you can build, configure and troubleshoot. This gives you something useful to show employers, recruiters or instructors when applying for jobs, further training or technical opportunities.
Four of the projects are built step by step with the instructor. You will learn how to plan the project, configure the system, troubleshoot problems and understand why each part works.
In the final week, you will design, complete and present your own independent Linux project. You will receive full support from the Binary-Tech instructors while developing it, but the final result will be your own work.
Weekly Projects
- Week 1: Install Ubuntu & essential software, set up GitHub
- Week 2: Host a live web service with Apache or Nginx
- Week 3: Build your own cloud storage (NAS) and media server
- Week 4: Set up a secure WireGuard VPN and access your server from anywhere
- Week 5: Present your final project to the class
Why project-based learning works
Linux runs most of the websites, cloud platforms, and enterprise systems you use every day — but reading command lists doesn't teach you how it actually behaves under real conditions. This course flips that: every session exists to ship one working piece of infrastructure, and the Linux concepts get taught through building it, not before it.
By week 5, you won't just know Linux commands — you'll have built and secured your own multi-service Ubuntu server from scratch, and you'll be able to explain exactly how each piece works.
Key facts
- Start date: 10 October 2026 (We can offer flexible timing)
- Schedule: Saturdays & Sundays, 14:00–16:00 BST
- Duration: 5 weeks, 20 hours total, live online
- Level: Beginner-friendly — no prior Linux experience required
- Fee: £129
What you'll walk away with
- A working Ubuntu server you built yourself, hosting multiple live services
- Practical experience with APT, the Linux terminal, and Git/GitHub workflows
- A self-hosted website, NAS, media server, and VPN — all configured by you
- Working knowledge of Docker deployment, firewall configuration, and basic network troubleshooting
- A Certificate of Completion and a portfolio of real projects to show employers
By the end of the course, you will not simply have notes about Linux. You will have five completed projects, practical experience and a GitHub portfolio that provides evidence of your Linux skills.
How We Teach
This course is built around projects, not command lists. We introduce Linux concepts when they become necessary to make a real service work.
Students configure their own systems during class, ask questions, read logs, diagnose failures and correct configuration mistakes with instructor guidance.
The final project requires students to explain what they built and how it works, helping turn practical activity into transferable Linux understanding.
